RELEASE: Linda McMahon Enters GOP Primary for U.S. Senate
West Hartford, Conn., September 16, 2009 – Republican Linda McMahon today announced her candidacy for U.S. Senate. An accomplished businesswoman, McMahon is running for Senate because she believes uncontrolled spending, massive debt and government run health care will do long term damage to our economy and to our country.
“I have spent the past 30 years growing what began as a 13 employee small business into a publicly traded, global entertainment company that now provides over 500 jobs here in Connecticut .. I understand what it takes to balance a budget, create jobs and grow the economy,” said Linda, a co-founder and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, Corp. (NYSE: WWE). “Washington is out of control, and sadly, Senator Chris Dodd has lost his way and our trust. I can’t sit by on the sidelines anymore knowing that I have both the experience and the strength to stand up to special interests and bring badly needed change to Washington.”
Linda is committed to doing things differently. She will run a campaign that is largely self-financed. She will not accept PAC contributions or special interest cash. She will limit personal contributions to $100 or less.
Linda is a fiscal conservative who believes in America and its free market, free enterprise system. She believes government ought to incentivize job creators, and that small businesses need access to capital and credit in order to create jobs.
As CEO, Linda established herself and her company as a longtime leader in community service and charitable support. Linda spearheaded the creation of Get R.E.A.L. educational and literacy programs, including WWE’s nationwide reading challenge, a partnership with YALSA, the youth division of the American Library Association.
In 2005, Linda was appointed to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America National Advisory Council, and her company was routinely recognized for its support of the charity. In 2004, Make-A-Wish awarded the company the ‘Chris Grecius Award,’ its highest honor. Linda has also been a major supporter of such organizations as the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Linda and the WWE have always been staunch supporters of the military. Linda, as CEO, was honored to accept on behalf of the company the USO of Metropolitan Washington’s first-ever ‘Legacy of Hope Award’ (in honor of Bob Hope) for its support of USO’s Operation Care Package program. The company was also honored with the Secretary of Defense Exceptional Public Service Award and the GI Film Festival’s Corporate Patriot Award.
Linda was elected in 2004 to serve on the Board of Trustees of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.
Linda was nominated by Governor Jodi Rell earlier this year to the 11-member state Board of Education.
